Each scan must capture not only tooth morphology but also the functional anatomy that guides growth, airway balance, and myofunctional correction.

Incomplete or distorted scans can compromise appliance adaptation and function.

Mandatory Areas to Scan

Capture full anatomic detail of both arches and surrounding soft tissue.

Upper Arch (Maxilla)

• Complete alveolar ridge and full sulcus depth
• Palatal vault including rugae and fovea palatinae
• Frenum and soft-tissue insertions (especially labial and buccal)
• Eruption zones and any developing teeth
• Teeth and gingival margins

Lower Arch (Mandible)

• Full alveolar ridge and vestibular sulcus
• Lingual frenum and floor of mouth
• Retromolar pad and distal extension area
• Teeth and gingival margins

Functional Zones

• Tongue resting spot: Ask the child to place the tongue in rest position and mark or capture this region in the scan.
• Soft-tissue morphology: Important for designing tongue and lip guidance areas.

Clinical Tips for Accuracy

• Re-verify that both arches are fully captured including soft-tissue extensions.
• Avoid saliva pooling — dry frequently for clean reflections.
• If required, calibrate the scanner before each case to prevent stitching errors.
• For younger patients, use short scanning intervals and gentle guidance.
• Always review scans with the patient in the chair to re-scan any missed areas immediately.
• Maintain consistent naming format across all scans for traceability.
